20 AUG 2024, LUMUT – MTC Engineering Consultancy Sdn Bhd has successfully developed a design for the refit of KD Laksamana Muhammad Amin, showcasing its expertise as both the design house and consultant for this groundbreaking project. The refit, executed by Grade One Marine Shipyard Sdn Bhd for Royal Malaysian Navy, marks a significant achievement in naval defense, with MTC at the forefront of innovation.
KD Laksamana Muhammad Amin, a key vessel in the Laksamana-class under the 24th Corvette Squadron, is the first to undergo this extensive refit program. MTC's innovative re-hulling and repowering processes have significantly extended the vessel’s operational life, reinforcing its role as a vital asset in Malaysia’s naval defense.
"This re-hull approach represents a paradigm shift in the Royal Malaysian Navy’s maintenance strategy," said the Royal Malaysian Navy. Originally constructed by the Italian shipyard Fincantieri, KD Laksamana Muhammad Amin has undergone substantial modifications under MTC’s design. The refit has not only enhanced the vessel’s space and hull strength but also facilitated the installation of modern equipment. With only the mast, A Gun, and Y Gun remaining from the original design, the vessel has been almost entirely transformed—essentially, a new ship has been created.
Building on this success, MTC’s cutting-edge proprietary design will be applied to two more Laksamana-class vessels, KD Tun Abdul Jamil and KD Tan Pusmah.
This milestone highlights MTC’s leadership in the naval defense industry, proving that a 30-year-old vessel can be effectively restored to meet modern demands with enhanced operational capabilities, extended lifespan, and improved supportability. It also underscores the capabilities of MTC as a pioneering force in advancing the naval defense sector.
