Dengkil, Selangor – In a landmark effort to preserve Malaysia’s industrial heritage, MTC has been appointed to lead the intricate restoration and conservation of the historic tin dredging vessel, Kapal Korek Sri Banting. Located in Dengkil, Selangor, the Sri Banting dredge stands as one of the last surviving relics of Malaysia’s tin mining industry, a sector that once drove the nation’s economy.
Constructed in 1974, the Sri Banting dredge ceased operations in 1997 and has since remained dormant. Today, it is one of only two surviving tin dredges in Malaysia, alongside the Tanjung Tualang TT5 in Perak. Recognizing its historical significance, restoration efforts have been initiated, with the first phase focusing on refloating and stabilizing the vessel.
MTC, a leader in engineering consultancy, has been entrusted with overseeing this delicate and complex process. The project involves comprehensive engineering assessments, structural reinforcements, and advanced recovery techniques to ensure the dredge is safely restored to its original position without further damage. The challenges are immense, given the vessel’s age and the need to balance preservation with modern engineering practices.
The restoration of Kapal Korek Sri Banting is not just a technical endeavor but also a cultural mission. The ultimate goal is to establish the site as a designated Heritage Site, supporting the government's broader vision of achieving UNESCO World Heritage recognition. Such an achievement would cement the dredge’s status as a vital industrial relic of Malaysia’s past and a symbol of the nation’s rich mining heritage.
MTC has pledged its full support to this ambitious project, emphasizing its commitment to preserving Malaysia’s history for future generations. The project aims to not only preserve the Sri Banting dredge but also transform it into an iconic historical attraction, with the goal of educating and inspiring future generations about Malaysia's industrial legacy.
The restoration of Kapal Korek Sri Banting represents a unique intersection of engineering expertise and cultural preservation. As MTC takes on this monumental task, the project underscores the importance of safeguarding Malaysia’s heritage while showcasing the nation’s capability to tackle complex engineering challenges.
Once completed, the Sri Banting dredge is expected to become a key historical and tourist destination, offering visitors a glimpse into Malaysia’s tin mining history and its enduring impact on the nation’s development.
